School has started back and it has taken over my life it seems, but never fail I will keep creating new work soon or later. Hopefully sooner than later. One main thing that I have to overcome is what am I going to do next. Should I keep creating portraits or something entirely different like abstract landscapes? I really have thought long and hard about this and came to the conclusion that I will create art. One idea that I have thought of is the idea of dreams as a child. In other words "what did you want to be when you grew up?" I had a small drawing from when I was in 1st grade in my show. It was me as a policeman. I really like take this idea and further explore the idea and create a series of works based on this idea. I asked my grandma last night what she wanted to be when she grew up. She said Roy Rogers or a cowgirl. I wouldn't have guess in a thousand years that my grandma wanted to be a cowgirl. But, I guess you never know until you ask.

Another idea was to create a series of works based on what people do in the everyday life that I admire in away. I don't know if this makes sense but, it's a hard thing to describe. I got this idea last night when I was at my grandma's house and she was ironing my clothes for day's student teaching as BSHS. So I'm thinking about doing a series of work honoring these small things that make people important to me in some way. For example, I would create a work that shows my grandma ironing or my dad being the handyman around the house or even my mom cutting coupons out of the paper on Sunday afternoon. I think I want to paint these with an expressive impasto style where you could identify what they are doing, but not the person necessarily. I think this is my best bet yet.

One final idea was the life of books. I know that they are lifeless object that we enjoy by reading, but what if they had a mind of their own. I was in the USCU library the other day and noticed that they stamped the due date inside the back cover. So this caught my attention like many things do, and I began to read all the dates of when they were due. Some of them haven't been checked out since 2000 and others have never been checked out before. I was the first person to check this out. I really don't know where this idea will lead but I'm willing to explore it and create art work out of it somehow.

So, I guess I will have to explore these ideas further and see what happens. Hopefully I will create a series that will speak to the masses.Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015162325754634842.post-82996633945866278572010-08-30T10:01:00.000-07:002010-08-30T11:59:16.366-07:00Successful Showing!!!My first solo or any art show is now over and I have to say I think it was very successful! At the opening night we have over 200 people show up to see what I have been doing over the summer, along with other work from over the years. It was an amazing experience. I was so amazed of all the people that came out and wanted to see what I had done and my art. I can't describe how it felt in words. It was an amazing night to say the least. I got to meet all kinds of people and talk with them about my art and what I am hoping to get a cross when the viewer looks at my work (if you want to know more about this please read this article by Cindy Landrum: http://www.journalwatchdog.com/spartanburg/782-hes-the-man-in-the-mirror). I also really liked the comments that people made about my artwork and how much they liked it and what they felt about it. They were all positive comments and one negative one. We wont go there. However, it was a lot of work, did I say a LOT! I never knew how hard it would be to have a solo show and putting it together. I had some help along the way with my family, Nodine and others. I can't say "thank you" enough to these people.

Here are some pictures of the exhibition.

<img style="cursor:pointer; I'm so excited about it and can't wait until the opening night, which is the 19th of August. I have been working so hard the past couple of weeks getting this show together. I never knew how much work it took to get a art show together, especially when you are doing a lot of it by yourself, like framing and hanging the show etc... However, I have had a hand full of people that has help a whole lot during the past few weeks. First of all is Jane Nodine, who is one of my professors at USC Upstate. She has helped so much with promoting the show by making a announcement to be sent to everyone via e-mail and the mail to contacting Tammy Whaley at school to have a press release about the show. That's the other person that has helped a lot with the promo of the show. She wrote the press release and contacted the local newspaper about the show and Cindy Landrum who wrote an article in the Spartanburg Journal. It has been a lot of work but it will all pay off in the long run. Ohhh last but not least certainly the most important is my family has helped me the most throughout the years for supporting and encouraging me with my art. I guess if they wouldn't have celebrated my art before then you probably wouldn't be reading this right now. So, thanks mom, dad, Matt, Ashley, grandma and grandpa for pushing me to this point.

If you would like to come the show will run August 15-29 at the West Main Artist Co-op in downtown Spartanburg. The opening reception is on the 19th from 5:30-9:00pm. The Co-op is located at 578 W. Main St, Spartanburg, SC 29301.Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015162325754634842.post-33323761396244598662010-07-08T13:20:00.000-07:002010-07-08T13:32:58.719-07:00I'm making myself into a rug.I guess this idea is very much like the "Falling Into Pieces" work. Where I'm wanting to blend into the surroundings and seem like I wasn't there. I first got the idea to do a rug be buying one of those cheesy latch hook rugs in Wal-mart for 2 dollars and made that little rug with the sun shine and rainbow. Then I went looking at Hobby-Lobby one day and saw the material for one of these rugs but you could make up your own design on it, and they even had the yarn already cut into little piece and like 50 colors! So I decided to create my own shag rug with this latch hook thing. The picture is of a side profile of be looking the viewer straight in the eyes as if I was look directly at them. I'm wanted the view to be active in the work and react to it be doing this. It has a large paint splatter over the top half of the work signifying them stuff that people has thrown on me and also as a literal sense in that someone might spill a drink or wine on the carpet. So this is the beginning stages of the rug.

Drawn out on tracing paper:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqbriYXEp0BwpLHQfWELfPQnv6nN7vTROHGlq9J5b4DG9dnn1BF0CLvtl6PmucnZu77RDtTvwctggjqhD3KyZ7iB7W7yo5UNi6K2PrhopJd7gMwRFtHg-tpbFEOHZnYaTaDRbJMfKAiF8/s320/34115_1389251044508_1029050908_30968581_6775868_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491635520305557586" />

Drawing out on a LARGE piece of paper:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGaROikpxFVzgkgRMI1zGX0aamZtGLhIeJMoAvPdHZhX33j5fk_oh9YLJrU6qPRtC9GGktme8PRHEvGO7Deec1gERYOpET-THHeybWwM9iJ4PeUqLMwHmgUxJ78pQp6LoYARqbjByJbkY/s320/35722_1390543716824_1029050908_30971431_2326975_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491635795165343458" />

Transferred onto the rug material:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjlbB2OpTYXQeBN6zgKSR-ZDKxaHqNoJF6aT-6Ylk7Uad1sZuMCJ2x4qlgTORNgYGQ7KHPQzorGxvtD12TFJG3dwVhYAj5Ynr-t-2nRCzqmzqgKPEuTDHXyPN2oI2KziSFgumKIwZsltA/s320/36888_1390544076833_1029050908_30971432_4091196_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491636035190892802" />Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015162325754634842.post-83071260976260906482010-06-29T15:09:00.001-07:002010-08-03T12:26:15.206-07:00Chuck Close Want a be...People often wonder why I do self portraits and I say "I don't really know." However I really do. It's because in high school I had AP Art and I had create 12 artworks that were the same subject matter. I took art so much in high school I already had 6 or 7 self portraits already done and so I decided to keep moving on in that direction. So in college I took painting one class and we had to paint a self-portrait in a famous artist's style and I chose Chuck Close. After many types looking up Close on the internet and in books I realized he also did many self-portraits. This gave me another boost in my self-portrait concept again. In the next semester I took printmaking and this course was more about the processes rather than the subject matter. I used the face or self-portraits in all my printing. From high school and these two college classes I have used my portraits to express emotions and hopefully to engage the viewer.

For this next work I decided to do another Chuck Close work, but with my own twist (hopefully it will work out). I'm very expressive with most of my work, no matter what medium I work with. So here are some of the pictures of the4 beginning and I'll post some more as I get parts of it done.

Self-portrait done in painting one class:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 197px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQeH4q0Smsfg-h-ZAwrf-LBryZoeMD190OSUrcmoAjdHvwFKUibYDFdcf0TnZbrDTq26HK9sIuFgPD7C61uBor3g5PZmhvT627MjcNjrCvpoi6Syy_gZOfOdtMjVAeFWAL2QZqdNPX2K8/s320/untitled.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488326122831125186" />

NEW Portrait in progress:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTznf9Ro_mX6AconCebAE-0IxN7rxHILfeO5aEXh2EX6-_juXbld4uPFM1H-tRPBQJn0UfW-Pjj5qy4T9CKM0Ec6r9Er88hMnVdwonyrgpwa2lTxM3rO-fzdw0MLR-htzvEy-QEs7UD7g/s320/20849_1381619133715_1029050908_30951123_6910251_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488326275641014002" />

Finished!!!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTxXt1TEIp8flQessBZYfWk9I5qAA_6HNGgAsVG6dZ_xb_-r-nlFuc_FcuKeZgX7aacyvD-waREfO7nxio6TeE8CwRygOKtdlTgPZXyqPpTtKhRHcuJSdyps8AgUTZO10djF6gJhoCbnc/s320/38381_1413427408902_1029050908_31027246_7351258_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501267083469851202" />Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015162325754634842.post-43177849647292466942010-06-24T08:20:00.001-07:002010-06-25T15:30:03.255-07:00"Into Pieces"This is the current work that I'm working on. I had this idea of blending into a wall and see people like as if I was never there. I guess you could say "a fly on the wall." So that was the idea for this work. I started with painting a large portion of my face; eyes, lips, nose (the bigger stuff). Then I took paint samples form a local retailer (thanks Wal____) and began to finish the face and then used them in the background too, so that I was "blending into the background." I hope it will work out in the end. Til next time, Chris
First: Painting
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnSNZ3uoaQ0uD75enve3VqJwzTCIcq9QNCud5FJu-MeAkYdu4_hFpou7Rky9UfRIdUHZAroaYPiLoJqN5IO22TT2eAGq3snhmPyaZBCPeKRfggdxJx-b8TwuNCxuFQ4asYFFD-qAChsU/s320/37252_1374634559105_1029050908_30932585_1709525_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486362988521060930" />
Second: Adding paint samples to face and neck
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlmo5Fxbb6vJUeaHRl40OxYJeOC2eb8skaF_02rYk8J3A3l61j3lcLqZT_hlGbj5hh3NCkvBI3qYZi0Ii8pgukSNnGLLQ8kMcd1Vh5F25LwF7HvkavsHwS1TiA16vtvApzyli7O6mGtyc/s320/33400_1376143956839_1029050908_30936453_7998238_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486363109958919426" />
Third: Stage
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivkaiit_RF_x_GojF6XBejCRaPRwuAT_MLqHXI3oOFciCgfjlrusJAuF9pqRu6Htwcgs1SCcJlwsvbQG55ft75RAVDE7NzB97MinlYJ0SVPxXeOrIul6cUaQH_PTcu3besK3yQUUmEDWA/s320/35542_1377029898987_1029050908_30938581_2214608_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486363293897005298" />
Fourth: Finished??????
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh53uEcjNTnhlhz3QaZizLuCnVB-OQCxJfQjPwP1JNcVVxzMaBuDELweuCXg_HRKNjLxLQNZ2y8yZDcOMF7MId2b_atgiIPDnJ_cvlQGLMOu6xHbO7cp1AUkEt8OOIsmLJ_h_Rst59jGt4/s320/34239_1378622178793_1029050908_30942342_6241148_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486768947048908946" />
Fifth: FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM9W-NvPBEhF7YI94BuirBocN_BRV-xC5G-bpITjH8-8I6geACokFh0NoGyjp02_fhrBVdClIviio6KqQyCfNdVk0gIJ6LwyW6lX3cR0SYEnTDui2Uy4LjigNVsVa1aIxxYmDH__9Mj-4/s320/36648_1378797823184_1029050908_30942610_104618_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486842062294671330" />Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015162325754634842.post-56937015038505787742010-06-23T08:50:00.000-07:002010-06-23T08:59:48.915-07:00FIRST BLOG!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKwPZamTcnRWpyO_SCNG2KYIMxnsRmDy_2ap4IIdEmgO_aacbSmh7u-syf8Q-Qm_jDXOku0DDTEZ8oTobZ2k7mxPMmdXMfs6VA36z6GB9oWBaaiSUtwWxfP5dAghG0xA7Sxjr_saK5bIY/s320/12968_1214336751760_1029050908_30597401_3928520_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485999237458838754" />
I have always wanted to create a blog about art and get some feedback about my artwork form others around the country. I guess I should start telling a little about my self in this first blog. So, here it goes for the record...

Artist Statement:

I was born and raised in Spartanburg. I have always been interested in art and drawing as far back as I can remember. I can remember doodling and always drawing on my homework and papers in school. As I grew older my passion for art grew. In high school I took AP Art, which allowed me to explore mediums and subject matter. By this exploration I found self-portraits and how I could use emotions and mediums/styles to create works that engaged to viewer. After graduating from high school in 2006, I attended the local tech school for a year and a half before attending USC Upstate. I am seeking a degree in Art Education (keep my in mind, I need a job after a graduate in May 2011) and a minor in Art History.
My personal art functions as a means to express myself. I can let the expression of my emotions emerge from the paint, rather than explaining myself verbally to the viewer. Even though I think a certain piece is expressing a definite emotion, viewers might make their own assumptions about the work. I think this is a good thing because viewers need to interpret the work in their own way. Although, I contend that the artist’s intention should always be kept in mind.
My artwork functions as a means of dialogue. I hope it sparks conversation about the viewer’s own emotions and experiences. The experience the artist and viewers make with an artwork is priceless. There isn’t another way to have that emotion evoked other than looking at a particular piece of art. Some of my art might evoke the emotion of anger within the viewer or another piece might remind the viewer of a personal experience of a trip or something else. The value of the artwork is more than a price tag to me; it’s the experience that the viewer has with an artwork
My self portraits challenge the statue quo by denying gender stereotypes and social norms. In America we think that men are suppose to keep their emotions in “check.” I like the idea that my art contributes to what I hope is a growing trend, that it becomes more acceptable for men to express their emotions openly. In Self-portrait, 2006 I am trying to convey the emotion of sadness and depression. In American society the man of the house is never to revile this outside himself.

So that's that. See you next time.Chris Turner Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12106463975910341187noreply@blogger.com0
